Mr. Dean is best remembered here as one of the
school's outstanding athletes, developed by the
late Dr. Donovan
Moffett, coach, who started
athletics on an upgrade here. He won he
"B" in four branches of athletics. In one
year, he won the high jump in the state track and
field meet with the points that would have given
Brazil the championship, but was disqualified
for a minor error in form while clearing the
bar. He was a favorite of Coach Moffett,
who advised Ed to go on to college.
Young Dean
attended and was graduated from Central Normal
College at Danville with a B.A. degree, on the
proverbial "shoe string." He put
studentship above athletics at the college since
he had to be up at 3:30 a.m. to deliver a milk
route at 4 a.m. every day.
Following his graduation, he coached basketball
and taught at Fontanet for 30 years and was
moved to Garfield in the county consolidation of
schools three years ago. He developed many
outstanding teams at Fontanet and is credited
with having given the team its famous name as
"Bean Towners."
Mr. Dean was born at Belle City, Mo., Nov. 12,
1903, son of Lora and Mary Trevis Dean, but his
formative years were spent in Brazil.
Mr. Dean
suffered an attack about 11 o'clock Sunday
morning at the Holloway Grove in Fontanet and
was rushed to the hospital from there.
Mr. Dean
had been active in civic affairs at Fontanet,
serving for 17 years as secretary-treasurer of
the Fontanet Bean Dinner Association and in the
same office for the Nevins Township Fire
Department.
He was a
member of the Central Christian Church, Terre
Haute; of Rosedale Lodge No. 259, F.&A.M., and
of the Brazil Elks Lodge.
Surviving
are the widow, the former Frieda Hermeling;

of Attica, Mrs. Paul (Meryle) LeMay, at home,
and Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Laughrey of Terre
Haute; one foster son, Leonard L. Miller,
Honolulu, Hawaii; one sister, Mrs. Bill Knierim
of Brazil, and four grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by four brothers, Forest,
