James E. Lawson
Class of 1941
SULLIVAN — James E. Lawson, 84, of Sullivan and
formerly of Rosedale, died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday,
July 1, 2007, in his residence. He was a retired
press operator for IBM at Greencastle. He was
born June 2, 1923, in Vigo County, to the late
Frank Lawson and Mary Clark Lawson. His first
wife, Joilet E. “Joy” Clark Lawson, whom he
married on July 17, 1946, died Oct. 29, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Lily Sutherland
Moreland Lawson, whom he married Nov. 23, 2002;
two stepsons, Ron Moreland and wife Jane of
Sullivan, and Joe Moreland and wife Monya of
Carlisle; one stepdaughter, Donna Cornetto and
husband Eddie of Washington, Pa.; one brother,
Bob Lawson and wife Betty of East Glenn; nine
stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews; and special friends,
Janet and Virgil Burris of Jasonville. He was
preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Connie
Horton, in July 2005; a sister, Marie Huffman;
and two brothers, George Lawson and Charles
William “Bill” Lawson.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he
received the American Theater Ribbon,
Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine
Liberation Ribbon and a Victory Medal World War
II. He was a 50-year member of the Rosedale
Masonic Lodge 259, a 50-year member of Scottish
Rite Valley of Terre Haute, and a member of the
American Legion Tony Kashon Post 290 in
Rosedale. He loved to hunt, fish and raise
hunting dogs.
Services were held Thursday, July 5, 2007 in
Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 Main St. in
Rosedale. The Revs. Bill Herb and Melvin Nudding
officiated. Burial with military graveside
honors by the Rosedale American Legion Tony
Kashon Post 290 was in Rosedale Cemetery. |
