Florida L. Lowry, 77, of Terre Haute died at
9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, in her
residence. She was a school teacher with the
Vigo County School Corp.
She was born April 25, 1929, in Vermillion
County to Edgar Lowry and Cora Miller. Survivors
include one brother, Bill Lowry and his wife
Judy; nieces, Patricia Gavin, Debra Sims, Carman
Kivlin, Lynn Kivlin, Brenda Christian, Diana
Ludwig, Darleen Rose and Sharon Nigro; and
nephews, Charles Kivlin, William C. Lowry and
Robert Lowry. She was preceded in death by one
brother, Glenn Lowry; and sisters, Lucille
Kivlin and Martha Fetter.
She graduated from Fontanet in 1947 and Indiana
State University in 1951. She also earned a
master’s degree from the University of Iowa. She
was an Indiana State University Alumni. During
the course of her career, she taught at West
Vigo High School from 1960 to 1962, Gerstmeyer
High School from 1962 to 1971, and Terre Haute
North Vigo High School from 1971 to 1989. She
received the Eleanor St. John Distinguished
Alumni Award in 1981, National Federation of
Business and Professional Woman’s Conference
Outstanding Woman of the Community in 1981, and
was named Southern Indiana Athletic Conference
Coach of the Year in 1975, 1977 and 1980. She
was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of
Fame. She was a member of several professional
organizations, groups and was a professional
Girl Scout director.
Services are 1 p.m. today in Mattox-Wood Funeral
Home. Burial is in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
