John Harley “Mick” McDonald, 81, of Sandcut died
at 12:03 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, in Union
Hospital.
He was born July 31, 1925, in Coal Bluff to Acel
McDonald and Florence Rowe McDonald. Survivors
include two sons, Mickey Dean McDonald and Kenny
McDonald; one daughter, Debbie Beard and her
husband, John; two brothers, Travis and his
wife, Joann of Terre Haute and Wilbur McDonald
and his wife, Henrietta of Columbus;
grandchildren, Peggy McDonald, Brian Craft,
Jeremy Craft, Cole McDonald, Jesse McDonald,
Audra McDonald and Jonathan Beard; and two
great-grandchildren, Michael Craft and Arial
Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents;
and one brother, Don McDonald.
He was a Navy veteran during World War II,
serving on the USS Barcus. He was a 1942
graduate of Fontanet High School, a member of
the Bean Dinner Association, serving as
treasurer for 30 years, a member of Laborers
Union 204 for 50 years, and a member of Kerman
Grotto Drum Corps, American Legion Post 104 and
Rosedale Masonic Lodge 259. He was known as the
“Mayor of Sandcut.”
He will be greatly missed by his family.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Mattox-Wood
Funeral Home, with the Revs. Kenny Tilford and
Bill Herb officiating. Burial is in Roselawn
Memorial Park, with graveside military rites.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, with Masonic
services at 7 p.m.
