Second Terre Haute Soldier Dies in Viet Nam

The body of PFC. Herman Richard Meneely, 21, who was killed in South Viet Nam last week when he stepped on a land mine during a battle, will be returned to Terre Haute for funeral services.

The 21-year old soldier was the second man from Terre Haute to die in the Viet Nam war. Capt. Eugene Fowler of Terre Haute, who died in April, 1965, in a similar land mine explosion, was the first.

Meneely had been in Viet Nam only a few weeks when he was killed. He entered the Army in September, 1965, and was sent to Viet Nam May 14. He was a member of Co. C 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry, First Infantry Division.

Meneely had attended Fontanet and Gerstmeyer High Schools. He is survived by the wife, Mrs. Annabelle Meneely and his daughter, Shelly Kay, 2424 High Avenue; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Meneely, 1515 Ash Street Terre Haute; one sister, Mrs. Lona Boyce, Terre Haute, and one half-brother William Winn, Oklahoma.

Funeral services are pending at the Thomas Funeral Home.

He was buried at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Section 14, Block S, grave #23.
