3rd Vigo Youth Killed in War
Pvt. Taylor O. Pierson, Jr., was killed in
action September 8 in Korea, according to a
Department of Defense message delivered Thursday
night to the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor O.
Pierson, Sr., operators of a general store in
Fontanet.
Known to local friends and relatives as “Buddy,”
Pvt. Pierson would have been 18 years old in
November. He is the third
Vigo County soldier to be killed in the
Korean War.
Having lived in Terre Haute until about 10 years
ago, Pvt. Pierson attended St. Patrick’s and St.
Ann’s parochial schools. He enlisted for duty
with the armed forces in January, 1949, when he
was a senior at Nevins Township High School.
Besides the parents, he is survived by a sister,
Miss Mary Ruth Pierson.

Rites Saturday for Fontanet War Hero
Fontanet, Ind., October 24, 1951-(Special)
Funeral services for Pvt. Taylor O. Pierson,
Jr., 19 years old, of Fontanet, will be held at
2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Mattox
Funeral Home. Rev. Acel McDonald will officiate
and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
Lawton Byrum Post 972, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
will conduct military gravesite rites.
Pvt. Pierson was killed in action in Korea,
September 8, 1950, while serving with the 2nd
Division. He had served in the armed forces
since December, 1949, and had spent two months
in Korea.
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor
O. Pierson, Sr., and one sister, Miss Mary Ruth
Pierson, at home; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Mehoke, of Fontanet, and an aunt, Mrs.
Mary Ruth Pierson, of Terre Haute.
The body will arrive in Terre Haute at noon
Thursday and will be brought to the Mattox
Funeral Home here. |
