Walter Samuel “Buss” Valentine, 89, of Terre Haute, formerly of Fontanet, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2006, in Health South Hospital. He retired as a pipefitter from the former Commercial Solvents Corporation after 42 years of service.

He was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Fontanet to Aust Valentine and Nell Gibbs Valentine. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Celeste Meadows Valentine. Survivors include his wife, Frances Jackson Valentine; children, Lucy Sheehan and her husband Tim, Pam Cox and her husband Fred, all of Terre Haute, Frances D. Valentine and her fiancé Bob Palmer, and Becky Barton and her husband Bob, all of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Erin Downey and her husband Patrick, Libby Rubacha and her husband Matthew, and Jonathon Barton; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kate and Ashley; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Dane Valentine.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, during which he served in the Southwest Pacific. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, American Legion Post 404 at Prairie Creek, West Terre Haute Lodge 687 Free & Accepted Masons, Order of Eastern Star Chapter 428 at West Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine Temple, and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved watching the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Indiana University basketball, the Indiana Pacers, and Bobby Knight.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Scott officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by VFW Post 972. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and prior to services Thursday.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospitals, with envelopes available in the funeral home.
